What makes you unique?

…and why is that important when it comes to getting booked?
Whether you own your own business and want to bring in more customers, or if you’re a performer and want to book more concerts or speaking engagements, one of the first things people want to know about you is “What do you do?” Think about it for a moment, when you introduce yourself to someone don’t you usually offer a handshake along with your name and something about what you do? So why is it important to be unique, especially in your introduction? That’s a good question…
As a consultant to business people, musicians and speakers all over the country teaching how to increase sales and bookings, I ask many of these entrepreneurs and Musicpreneurs™ what makes them unique. Some reply by giving me a blank stare while others say something such as “I can be a keynote speaker” or “I’m an inspirational speaker;” if they’re musicians they might say “we do country rock style music” or “I’m a contemporary Christian artist.” Though these answers are sincere, and somewhat specific, is there anything really unique about them? No. These descriptions tell me nothing about who the artist or business person is or what they do—they only tells me a tiny bit about their general style! If anything, these cliché answers just stereotype the performer or business and can even put a wall between them and the person they’re trying to book with. If you want to book your business or talent, you must give unique specifics—and do so in a nutshell! Your level of uniqueness will either set you apart or blend you in with your competition.
